Civilians and First Responders to Be Honored for Burn Heroism at First Spirit of Courage Celebration
Heroes from the Lehigh Valley, Scranton, Altoona, Lehighton, Saylorsburg, White Haven, Bloomsburg, Shickshinny and Muncy to be recognized
Lehigh Valley, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2006) – Residents from Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania will be honored for acts of heroism or commitment to burn education on the evening of Sept. 21 at the inaugural Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage Awards Celebration at Lehigh Valley Hospital—Muhlenberg in Bethlehem.
Two first responders and nine civilians will be honored for risking their lives to save someone from a burn or death by fire. Also being honored are three individuals who did an outstanding job educating the community about fire safety and burn prevention.
A highlight of this event will be the presentation of the Fallen Hero Award to Mrs. Vickie Gallardy, widow of Captain Robert Gallardy of the Altoona Fire Department. He succumbed to burns in October 2005 that he suffered while training future fire instructors. This award will be presented by Pennsylvania Fire Commissioner Ed Mann.
Two honorees of note are Tom Gehringer and Mike Shaw, employees of the Turnpike Commission. They came upon a burning tractor-trailer in the southbound lanes of Rt. 476 a few miles south of the Lehigh Tunnel. The driver, Michael Wallace, of Philadelphia, was trapped inside the cab.
Gheringer, an EMT with Lehigh Township, knew they had to remove the driver from the cab to save him from the inferno inching closer to him. Together, he and Shaw freed Wallace from the rig, then dragged him away from the truck before it was engulfed in flames.
Tickets for the recognition event are $25 each, with proceeds going to benefit the Regional Burn Center of LVHHN and the Burn Prevention Foundation. To purchase tickets for the event, call 610-969-3930. The Valley Preferred Spirit of Courage program was started locally by Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH) and the Burn Prevention Foundation to recognize persons who go “above and beyond” to perform a heroic act to save someone from burn deaths or injury. Valley Preferred, a partnership of doctors and hospitals, is sponsoring the program to raise public awareness regarding burn safety and prevention.
