The plastic surgery program offers broad experience in general plastic surgery, including:

• surgery of the hand
  
• management of cleft palate and other congenital and acquired deformities
  
• cosmetic surgery of all types
  
• cancer surgery including surgery of the head and neck
  
• facial fractures
  
• burn treatment
  
• microsurgical reconstruction, including free flaps

The residency is a three-year program. Candidates who have satisfactorily completed three years of general surgery will be eligible for this residency.

Over 700 patients are admitted each year to the plastic surgery service at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network. An additional 1,200 cases are treated on an outpatient basis. The hospital's eight-bed burn center treats more than 70 patients with severe burns each year. Residents are actively involved in trauma service and with a wide variety of reconstructive problems.

Through the program, residents gain meaningful experience treating a variety of patients on an inpatient and outpatient basis. An accredited microsurgery and laser laboratory provides residents with the opportunity to receive formal "hands-on" training in these advanced surgical modalities.

Applicants must have a minimum of three years of approved training in general surgery at one institution. Applicants with a certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) must have completed five years of surgery, including a chief resident year in general surgery, and be board eligible. These prerequisites are specified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, which must approve the applicant's training in writing before acceptance.
