Transitional Year

Transitional Year

The transitional year is designed to meet the educational needs of medical school graduates who have chosen a specialty which requires one year of general clinical education. This year is also an option for students who are undecided about their final career choice, or who require one year of training prior to fulfilling military or public health obligations.

Sponsored jointly by the departments of Medicine and Surgery, the transitional program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is administered by the Department of Medicine.

Requirements

Transitional year residents are required to spend up to five-and-one-half blocks of training in internal medicine (three blocks general medicine); one block SICU; one block MICU; two weeks night float; one block in emergency medicine and up to seven-and-one-half blocks of elective time. The transitional-year resident is expected to function in the capacity of a categorical first-year resident in the department in which he or she is rotating to include taking call when required.

Transitional interns are given the opportunity to take electives through any of the other residency programs and subspecialty services to include but not limited to:

General surgery, inpatient and outpatient, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Family Practice, and all the subspecialties in Internal Medicine.

In addition, the resident gains experience in outpatient medical care during this year by participating in the Lehigh Valley Physician Practice Walk-In Clinic during their ambulatory block.

The transitional year program can be arranged to fulfill the requirements of first-year residency training in internal medicine. The program is of the same high quality as our other ACGME-accredited residencies. Evaluations, counseling and support are provided to meet the resident's individual needs.

Please visit the Internal Medicine Residency site for more information regarding the program specifics and benefits as they are closely linked. We look forward to meeting you!
